The 106th Evacuation Hospital was a semi-mobile medical unit that first assembled at Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1943, crossed the Atlantic aboard the USS Wakefield in May 1944, and arrived in Normandy in July 1944.

It was commanded by Col. Hadly from its inception through Feb 12, 1945 and by Lt. Col. Hancock thereafter.

On April 1, 1945 Colonel Hancock, Cpl Larate, Cpl Waliky, Capt McLeod, and Capt Stout were captured by the Germans – and freed the next day. Major Fonde was killed in the action.

In Memoriam: William McKell Hadly, Col US Army, retired

We are sorry to hear of the passing of Colonel Hadly’s son, William McKell Hadly, Col US Army, retired,  who served through the Vietnam War.  Col. William McKell Hadly passed away in 2022. He was featured in the book, The Boys of Benning. It is excellent reading and highly recommended. The Colonel is responsible for his generous submission of letters his father, our Colonel Hadly, wrote and sent home to his wife, his wife, Ann McKell Hadly (1907 – 1996), during the war. That’s how we knew what was happening as the 106th maneuvered through France.  His generosity of these very private letters provided us with an insight to the 106th and for which we are all very grateful.  We can’t thank him enough for his contribution. Our prayers go out to Colonel William McKell Hadly.

In 2014 French Citizen of Thionville honor the Americans who liberated their city from the Germans.  On that day they re-opened the newly renovated Allied Bridge. The 106th was stationed in Thionville on November 23, 1944.
